Louise Sibert was born in 1841. [1] She died in 1878 or 1879. [1] She married Lawrence Pembroke "Pem" Guffin in South Carolina. [1] Pem was the son of of Charles B. and Jane Guffin. He was born about 1846 in South Carolina.

Pem was shot in the billiard saloon in the Abbeville courthouse on 27 September 1880. [2] The New York Times called the murder "a premeditated act to remove a fearless and influential opponent from the road to Democratic success." [3] The Anderson, South Carolina Intelligencer said, "he leaves several small children in a destitute condition. Mrs. Guffin died two or three years ago, and their children are orphans indeed." [4] The Abbeville Press and Banner published a transcription of the trial proceedings. The man who shot Pem was acquited on the grounds of self defense. [5]
